TAMPA SPECIALTY VETERINARY HOSPITAL’S SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS MODEL IS COMPETING NOSE-TO-NOSE WITH COMPETITION IN THE BIG APPLE
The Bay Area’s “sister hospital”, NYC Veterinary Specialists and Cancer Treatment Center Celebrates One-Year Anniversary in September |
Tampa, FL –After more than ten years of steady growth and with over 150 staffers caring for tens of thousands of patients each year, Florida Veterinary Specialists and Cancer Treatment Center (FVS) is the primary veterinary referral center for the state of Florida. FVS is also the largest private veterinary practice in the southeastern United States.
Word of FVS’s many recognitions and successes traveled straight to the New York City veterinary community where the need for a specialty veterinary facility, like FVS, was overwhelming. In 2005, a group of New York veterinarians hand-selected and invited FVS’s founders Neil Shaw, DVM, DACVIM and Darryl Shaw, MBA, CPA to bring their successful veterinary business model to the Big Apple.
“They asked if we could assist in developing an emergency and specialty hospital that would work closely with their practices. We already provided the utmost attention to client care and service, so it’s very exciting that we could take the same policies and principles developed right here in Florida and bring them to the greatest city in the world,” Neil Shaw, DVM, Diplomate DACVIM.
Less than one year ago, FVS celebrated the grand opening of NYC Veterinary Specialists and Cancer Treatment Center in Manhattan as part of its brave expansion into the traditionally ‘tough urban market’ known to New York City. Its only immediate competition is the Animal Medical Center, or AMC, which has been entrenched in the New York market for more than three decades. By using FVS’s same superior levels of patient and client care and a touch of southern hospitality, NYC Veterinary Specialists has been warmly received by the veterinary community and by pet owners alike—all in less than one year’s time.
“FVS recognized pet owners everywhere want to seek specialists who can help maintain the quality of life and longevity of their pets. FVS believed there was such a need and assembled a staff in almost every discipline of veterinary medicine. They don't want to just take over a case, they want the referring veterinarian to be involved in the patient's care and they do this by constantly communicating with the referring veterinarian about the case, that's part of what makes their business model such a successful one.” Dr. Eddie Garcia, Clinic Director at Veterinary Medical Clinic in South Tampa
The New York Times recently featured NYC Veterinary Specialists in their prestigious “Style Section”:
“A new player has arrived in New York, a city more obsessed than most with its pets and willing to spend lavishly on them. While it is not quite a cat- or dogfight that has broken out between the grizzled 97-year-old Animal Medical Center and the puppy-eager NYC Veterinary Specialists, vets around the city say the two are using every weapon in their arsenals to be considered top of the heap for advanced — frequently expensive —animal care.” Allen Salkin, The New York Times, July 22, 2007.
